On November 4, 2018, FoMA presented its 2018 Excellent in Modernism Award to Historic New England and its President and Chief Executive Officer Carl Nold for their profound commitment to enhancing our understanding of the Modern movement in Lincoln and for their preservation efforts enabling future generations to appreciate and learn from Modern design principles. In particular, FoMA recognized the work of Mr. Nold and Historic New England in working with the Hoover-Giese family and the Flansburgh family to establish preservation agreements for the residences of two of Lincoln’s foremost Modern architects: Henry Hoover’s 1937 family residence and landscape overlooking the Cambridge Reservoir and Earl Flansburgh’s 1963 family residence on Old Conant Road. And to mark the eve of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius and the 80th anniversary of Gropius’s iconic 1938 residence in Lincoln, FoMA recognized Mr. Nold’s and Historic New England’s stewardship and sensitive preservation efforts of the house.2018 award recipient 2018
